The emphasis of my practice is an orthopedic one. The majority of care I render is in response to musculoskeletal and nerve complaints, usually related to strains and sprains of the back and neck. This orientation conforms with the desires of most patients who seek chiropractic care. The sorts of treatment that I utilize are traditional full spine, manipulation, trigger point massage techniques, use of supports where indicated, and counseling regarding posture, rest, exercises, diet, and stress management to aid in recovery and in prevention of recurrences. Very few physical therapy modalities are permitted for chiropractic use in Washington, but the ones that I prefer, cold packs and sometimes heat, are readily available to anyone for at home use. I encourage patients to participate actively in their own therapy at home in order to help promote faster, more economical recovery by continuing therapy beyond the confines of an office call. Self help also serves to emphasize the importance of the patient’s status as the primary member of the health care team. Gerard E. Sullivan, DC |
