Personal and Educational Background

I am Gerard (Gerry) Sullivan, DC. I have lived and practiced chiropractic in University Place since 1975. My wife, Mary, comes from Waterbury, CT. She is a special education teacher in the University Place School District. My daughter, Meaghan, is a class of 2000 graduate of Curtis High School in University Place. There is a family graduation day picture of us with our golden retriever, Duchess, at the bottom of this page.

I am originally from Dedham and Westwood, adjacent suburbs immediately southwest of Boston, MA. My early education was mixed - two years in parochial school in Dedham, grades 3 to 9 in public schools in Westwood, and grades 10 - 12 at Lawrence Academy (class of '65) in Groton, MA. My family was fortunate enough to own a cottage in Wareham, MA, "the Gateway to Cape Cod." Summers just couldn't have gotten much better than that!

My post-secondary studies were at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; the University of Massachusetts, Boston; and the National College of Chiropractic, Lombard, IL. National College has recently been renamed National University of Health Sciences to reflect the fact that more disciplines than chiropractic are taught there.

Between my times at Cornell and UMass Boston I served three years in the US Army. I was trained in Military Intelligence, following which I studied Vietnamese language for a year. I served a year (October 1968-69) in Long Binh, Viêt-Nam as a prisoner of war interrogator.

In addition to the DC (doctor of chiropractic) degree, I have a BS in Human Biology. I have post-professional training in Chiropractic Rehabilitation and hold "board eligible" status in Chiropractic Orthopedics.

Why did I decide to become a chiropractor? Family and personal experience. My family had used chiropractic care for relief of muscle and joint complaints long before I arrived on the scene. The fact that my oldest brother was a chiropractor and loved his work was a major influence. My personal experience was that at the age of twelve or thirteen I began to suffer from severe headaches. My family's chiropractor treated my upper neck a few times and gave me complete relief. Most importantly, however, he inquired about my postural habits, and when he found that I liked to sleep on my stomach, advised me to sleep on my sides instead. Aside from the ones that occur as a result of a cold or flu, I have rarely suffered a headache since.

My professional affiliations include membership in the American Chiropractic Association and the Washington State Chiropractic Association.

My leisure time pursuits include messing around with computers, genealogy, and do-it-yourself projects.   I keep telling myself that I like gardening and yard work, but I am feeling less and less convinced. Click here to see a list of some of my favorite web links.
